  2024-2025 Hypatia First-Year Student Application
If you complete this application, please DO NOT complete the official Housing application for Hypatia until you have received your application decision.

This is the application for incoming first year female engineering students interested in living in the Hypatia community. You should only use this application if you have been given an admissions offer to the College of Engineering as a first year student for fall 2024.

You may apply to the Hypatia community before you accept your offer of admissions. However, if you are offered a spot in the community, you must complete the steps in the unofficial offer letter to complete the official Hypatia application through the Housing application process.

We will begin reviewing applications beginning in late January through the end of May and make our decisions on a rolling basis each week until the community is full.

The last day to submit your application through this method is Monday, April 15th at 8am. After April 15th, all applications will need to go through the official housing site: https://llp.vt.edu/. All applications submitted by April 15th at 8am will have a decision by the week of April 22nd.

A team of faculty, upper-class Hypatia and Galileo students, and CEED staff will read each application and make decisions for the community. The application includes only one essay question. We recommend writing this essay in a word processing software and have others review it before you submit. You may then copy and paste the essay into the application.

Our essay has a 300-500 word requirement.
Any essay submitted that is under 300 words will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed

Participating in Hypatia includes a required mentoring component. If accepted in the program, I understand that I will become part of a group of first-year Hypatia students and be assigned an upper-class Hypatia student as a mentor. I understand this component of the program will be a weekly commitment for the first ten weeks of the fall semester and will include a one hour meeting once a week for the first ten weeks. After the first ten weeks, the meetings will switch to monthly and will continue for the remainder of the year. I also authorize release of my on-campus address, my Virginia Tech email address (once created), and my cell phone number, given above, to my assigned mentor and my fellow teammates. I understand my mentor will be contacting me by phone in early August to set our first meeting date and I will commit to responding to their messages.
We have found that text messaging is great way for mentors and mentees to stay in contact throughout the fall semester. Are you willing to receive text messages from your mentor to communicate about mentoring events?
I understand that part of the requirement for Hypatia is a two credit course that is designed to help me transition from high school to college and polish my professional development skills. I understand the course will not count for graduation requirements but will affect my GPA. I also understand that while this course is offered in the fall semester, there are community requirements in the spring and that my grade for the course will be shown as "Incomplete" on my transcript and final grades will be released at the end of the spring semester.
I acknowledge that I have decided to complete this application prior to accepting my admissions offer to Virginia Tech. I agree to wait until I have received the pre-admission application decision before applying to Hypatia through the StarRez housing portal.  I understand that if I apply to Hypatia through StarRez prior to receiving the decision from this application, I will forfeit any offer given through this pre-admission Hypatia application process.

Please note you are able to complete your housing contract without submitting the Living-Learning Program application.
