Inclusivity in Project FeederWatch Discussion Groups

Virginia Tech is conducting a research study that aims to increase participation and inclusion of Black, Indigenous, and people of color and neurodiverse and disabled people in the participatory science project Project FeederWatch (Virginia Tech IRB #23-1346). In this study, we will be conducting 90-minute virtual discussions with people with these identities who feed wild birds, but do not participate in Project FeederWatch. By sharing your thoughts in one of these discussion sessions, you can help us understand how Project FeederWatch can be made more inclusive of all participants.

Your participation in this study is voluntary, and your responses will never be presented in a way that can be connected to your name or identity. Virtual meetings will be audio-recorded, and recordings will be stored securely and only accessible to study researchers. The results of the study will be published in summary form in presentations, reports, and journal articles. There are no known risks associated with your participation in this research; there are no right or wrong answers to the screening survey or subsequent meeting questions; and you can opt out of the study at any time, for any reason. If you are selected to participate in the focus groups, you will be offered a prorated honorarium in the form of a gift card based on how long you participate, starting at a base rate of $15 and increasing by $20 for each half hour up to a maximum of $75 for 1.5 hours.
