Hello,

This is a screening survey for our dietary assessment study. This survey will help us see if you are potentially eligible to participate in this study. Following the completion of the survey, we will contact you with the next steps. If you meet the criteria for this pre-screening survey, we will send you an informed consent document which outlines the specifics of the study. We will go through this document in detail at the first visit before any additional eligibility testing is conducted. To confirm if you meet the criteria for this study through additional testing, we will invite you to come to our lab on the Virginia Tech Campus.

The main purpose of this research project is to learn if weight status and attitudes towards weight status influence dietary reporting in adults and how we can improve the process of dietary assessment. The following is a short summary of this study to help you decide whether or not you would like to be a part of this study. Briefly, the full study involves 5 visits to the Virginia Tech campus over a 5 to 7-week period. This is a crossover study, meaning all participants will complete both periods (visit 1, 10-day period, 20-day washout, final 10-day period). During the first visit, you will complete questionnaires regarding weight stigma and have your height and weight measured. During the 10-day study period, you will complete a scan to measure your body muscle and fat mass (DEXA scan), consume a small amount of doubly-labeled water, and then we will collect urine samples after drinking the water, and again 10 days later. This will be repeated after a 20- day washout period. During the 10-day periods, you will complete 4 dietary recalls and wear an accelerometer to measure your physical activity. Doubly-labeled water is an objective measure of energy (calorie) expenditure and looks and tastes like plain water, and contains naturally occurring alternative forms of oxygen and hydrogen.

You will be given a $150 honorarium for completing all study visits and will receive information about your dietary intake and body composition.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. There are no foreseeable risks associated with completing this survey. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will only be shared with the project director and project coordinator. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential.

If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Dr. Valisa Hedrick at 540-231-7983 or by email at vhedrick@vt.edu.
