Workshop Description

Drawing from multiple well established sources and programs, including the nationally recognized Entering Mentoring curriculum, this free workshop will engage participants through interactive sessions on recognizing their expertise, exploring what a mentor is and is not, what a mentor does, and guidelines and best practices for mentoring undergraduate students in research. The principles presented will be applicable broadly to all areas of research. The workshop will only be offered in-person and includes a half-day together with the facilitator and peers from across campus, as well as pre-workshop preparation on Canvas not to exceed 2 hours of reading introductory documents and case studies to be used in the workshop.

This  workshop is designed and facilitated by Stephanie (Nikki) Lewis, PhD, Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Honors College, who brings over 10 years of experience and training in mentoring undergraduates and graduates in research, and is co-creator of the scaffolded mentoring model used in the Bevan Brown Molecular Modeling Lab at Virginia Tech (https://doi.org/10.1002/bmb.20975).

This workshop is open to faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. Participants are eligible to receive PDN credit. Program capacity is 50, accepted on a first come, first served basis.
