Bilingual Staff Interpreter (BSI) Training Overview

Participants in this group complete a 24-hour training. Participants in this program typically serve in other roles in an organization but because they are bilingual, they are often asked to provide language services for individuals seeking services (dual-role interpreters). Some may have had limited interpreter training before participating in the BSI training, but most have not had any formal training.

Participants completing the BSI are not qualified to provide language services outside of their organizations except to provide language access support for their clients in inter-agency transactions or sessions.
Things to remember:
  • You will receive confirmation for receipt of the application.
  • You will need to provide results to a language proficiency assessment
  • Acceptance notification will be sent after the application deadline.
  • For questions, please email hilalyalcin@vt.edu
BSI Proof of Language Proficiency:
  • Participants must provide a proficiency assessment that demonstrates a score of 80% or better or a comparative result of other established language proficiency tests such as ILR, TOEFL, etc.
  • Applicants from languages of lesser diffusion with no fluency test available in their target language can submit a notarized statement.

BSI Expectations:
  • Attend and actively participate in 24-hour training sessions, minimum 90%.
  • Complete pre-classwork
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge and obtain a score of 80% or better in the written test.
  • Demonstrate competence in the oral and skills test with a score of 80% or better.
