Survey on Potential Barriers to Digital Engineering Transformation
We are a team of researchers from Virginia Tech conducting a study to better understand the barriers organizations face during their digital engineering transformation.
Thank you for participating in this survey! This survey has 27 questions in total, and it takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. We know your time is valuable. As a token of appreciation, participants may enter a raffle to win one of two $50 gift cards at the end of the survey.
Background:
For this survey, please refer to the following definition of digital engineering (DE): “Digital engineering is an integrated digital approach that uses authoritative sources of systems data and models as a continuum across disciplines to support life-cycle activities from concept through disposal.”
Many organizations are currently navigating DE transformation efforts, and while every context is unique, many common challenges have emerged across industries. In this survey, we aim to understand how relevant these commonly observed challenges are to your own experience. To make this easier, we’ve grouped the challenges into six interrelated sociotechnical dimensions of technology, people, processes, culture, infrastructure, and goals. Please reflect on your own organization or project as you respond – your insights will help us better understand how these challenges play out in real-world settings.
Survey overview:
The survey consists of three sections:
- 1. Section 1 – Potential barriers to DE: Rate each barrier on a 5-point Likert scale based on how frequently you have encountered that in the DE context, and suggest any additional barriers currently missing in our list.
- 2. Section 2 – Organizational investments in DE: Rank the strategic investment areas your organization is prioritizing to enable DE.
- 3. Section 3 – Demographics and background questions: Provide basic participant information such as professional background, familiarity with DE, role in DE, and DE experience.

We will not collect personally identifiable information, and all data will be reported only in aggregate form. Per the GDPR, your data will be used solely for academic research purposes, will not be shared with third parties, and will be retained only as long as necessary for analysis and reporting.
